It’s time for a fashion focus post, and this week we are singing the praises of one of our most favourite children’s’ brands, Caramel Baby & Child.

If you are looking for sparkling, jewel encrusted tutus, dripping with diamonds, this is not the brand for you. If however, like founder Eva Karayiannis often found herself, you are constantly hunting for modern, luxurious and understated children’s pieces, Caramel Baby & Child is a one stop shop.

Founded in 1999, Eva originally ran the company selling an eclectic collection of handcrafted knitwear from Peru and Artisan clothing Britain, all from from her front room and kitchen!  It soon became clear that her customers needed a wider range of sizes, so Karayiannis decided to start designing garments herself.

Eva explains that she “wanted to find a modern, distinctive style, which could be individual—yet at the same time luxurious and understated, pieces as beautiful and useful as I could make them.”  As lovers of big pockets, beautiful and useful sound pretty good to us!

Caramel also love to push the boundaries of colour tones, often turning away from those that are usually associated with childrenswear, which is part of what makes them so popular.  Gone are the bubblegum pinks and neon brights, replaced with gentle mustards, rich navys, deep burgundies, and a host of sophisticated prints.

These prints are part of what Caramel Baby & Child have become known for.  The brand are not afraid of bold patterns, and love to inject a little British vintage flair.  

“We often reference the charm of vintage pieces, bringing them right up to date in the development stages of our collections. We also aim to push the boundaries of the colour palette you are supposed to use for children, creating a playful rhythm of layering colours and textures.”

For their newly released SS17 collection, we see gingham, and ditsy florals.  We adore this dress, which brings both of these prints together in perfect harmony.

And, its not just girls, that the brand caters for!  Caramel host a wonderful collection of boyswear too, featuring foliage green jumpers, navy stripe skinny jeans, and for the child truly on the pulse of fashion, a gorgeous range of Kimono print jackets.

Whilst the brand’s clothing is very popular with stylists, and often featured in magazines, Caramel does not aspire to chase what is ‘in’ or shy away from reviving what may be considered past.  Eva explains that “Our clothes are functional, and we try to go beyond trends. Our focus is still and always has been attention to detail – the distinctive collar or garment silhouette, cut from exquisite cloths and nostalgic knits in contemporary hues.”.
